According to a survey by Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the majority of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia sell their products through instant messaging applications.

"The survey results show that almost all businesses conduct online sales through instant messaging applications, namely 95.17%. Instant messaging can include applications such as WhatsApp, Line, Telegram, and others," wrote BPS in its *eCommerce Statistics 2022/2023* report.

Furthermore, 41.3% of e-commerce businesses in Indonesia sell through social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok.

Meanwhile, only 19.75% of local e-commerce businesses sell through marketplaces or similar digital platforms.

"The low utilization of marketplaces/digital platforms is a challenge for the government to encourage Indonesian e-commerce businesses to switch to marketplaces/digital platforms, so they can reach a wider market," said BPS.

This survey also found that 7.05% of businesses use email to sell, followed by 2.09% using a website.

BPS conducted this survey on a sample of 31,753 e-commerce businesses spread across 34 provinces and 302 regencies/cities. The sample in this survey comprised businesses that used the internet to receive orders or sell goods/services in 2022.

The data obtained in this survey comes from questions with multiple-choice answers.
