The Indonesian government has a grand vision for adopting artificial intelligence (AI) in public services.
However, the government still faces various challenges, such as a lack of supporting infrastructure and a lack of capacity within the domestic AI technology industry.
This is evident in the Government AI Readiness Index 2024 report released by the global business consulting firm, Oxford Insights.
Oxford Insights assesses government readiness to adopt AI based on three main assessment pillars:
- Government: The government's vision for AI, AI governance and ethics, the government's ability to adapt effectively, and the government's digital capacity.
- Data and Infrastructure: Availability of data representative of the national population, data availability for AI training, and supporting AI infrastructure.
- Technology Sector: Capacity for innovation, human resources, and maturity of the AI technology industry.
All these assessment pillars are then processed into a score on a scale of 0-100 points. The higher the score, the more prepared the government is assumed to be in using AI for public services.
In 2024, Indonesia's government readiness score for adopting AI reached 65.85 points.
This figure is higher than the global average score of only 47.59 points, and places Indonesia in 38th place out of 188 countries researched.
When broken down by assessment dimension, the Indonesian government has a very high score in terms of its vision for AI (100 points).
However, Indonesia's score remains low in terms of supporting AI infrastructure (42.71 points), and the maturity of the domestic AI technology industry (26.57 points).
