AI Chatbots are Booming in Indonesia: Download Trends

According to Sensor Tower's published *State of Mobile 2025* report, the trend of using artificial intelligence (AI) virtual assistants or chatbots is increasingly massive in Indonesia.

Downloads in Q1 2024 were recorded at only 1.81 million. Afterward, they decreased, even falling to the range of 94,000-500,000 downloads.

Entering Q2 2023, the figure rose to 2.42 million downloads. Then, in Q4 2023, it significantly increased to 9.17 million downloads.

AI chatbot downloads temporarily dropped in Q1 2024, reaching 6.74 million downloads. However, downloads persistently increased afterward. The latest data in Q4 2024 reached 20 million downloads, a new record since 2021.

The research team stated that by the end of 2024, several of the world's largest technology companies had launched AI chatbots, namely Google Gemini, ByteDance's Doubao, and Microsoft Copilot.

With the entry of these major players, the number of AI chatbot downloads increased by 119% year-on-year (YoY) in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The research team observed that ChatGPT remained the leading chatbot, accounting for approximately 40% of total global consumer spending on generative AI applications and 23% of total downloads in 2024.

"However, there is still ample room for other applications to grow," wrote the Sensor Tower team, as quoted on Tuesday (May 20, 2025).

Until the end of 2024, AI chatbots were also the most popular subgenre in the generative AI realm. However, many applications from various categories—travel, education, and social networking—have integrated their own AI features.

"There is still significant potential for these applications to try new and creative ways to leverage this technology," wrote the Sensor Tower team.
