A survey by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) in collaboration with BAKTI Kominfo reveals the age at which people in underdeveloped areas first used the internet.

The results show that 36.07% of respondents first accessed the internet during their teenage years (13-14 years old).

Furthermore, 31.96% of respondents were exposed to the internet from ages 19-34, 14.95% between 35-54 years old, and 12.67% between 10-12 years old.

Additionally, 3.65% of respondents in remote areas had internet access from under the age of 10. Only 0.68% of respondents started using the internet at age 54 or older.

APJII also found that the majority (73.20%) of respondents from remote areas first used the internet for social media.

Then, 13.60% first accessed chat applications, 4.80% for online gaming, and 3.30% for browsing.

This APJII and Kominfo survey involved 1,950 respondents from 64 underdeveloped districts spread across 17 provinces. Respondents were selected using probability sampling.

Data collection was conducted from July to September 2024 through face-to-face and telephone interviews.

59.23% of respondents were male and 40.77% were female. Respondents were dominated by millennials aged 28-43 years (40.10%), followed by Generation Z aged 12-27 years (34.36%), and Generation X aged 44-59 years (6.05%).
