Samsung has overtaken Oppo to become the leading smartphone vendor in Indonesia, capturing a 23.3% market share.
According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung shipped 2.1 million smartphones in Indonesia during Q1 2022.
This represents a 2.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase compared to the 2 million units shipped in the same period the previous year. Samsung's Indonesian smartphone market share also rose from 18.7% the previous year.
IDC stated that Samsung achieved the top spot in Indonesia in the first quarter after 2.5 years. Samsung's success was driven by its strategy of releasing several key models, such as the flagship Galaxy S22 series, the Galaxy A03 model, and several other A series models.
“The newly released Galaxy A53 5G, A52s 5G, and S22 series boosted Samsung's share in the 5G segment to 40%,” IDC's report stated on Thursday, June 16, 2022.
Oppo followed Samsung, shipping 1.8 million smartphones to Indonesia in the first three months of the year. This represents a 26.8% YoY decrease.
IDC noted that Oppo's share in the 5G segment was significantly lower at 3.7% in Q1 2022, compared to 26.4% in Q1 2021. IDC attributed this to other vendors expanding their 5G portfolios in the first quarter of this year.
Vivo and Xiaomi followed in the next positions, shipping 1.5 million and 1.3 million smartphones respectively. Vivo shipments decreased by 11.8% YoY, while Xiaomi's decreased by 39.9% YoY.
Realme occupied fifth place with 1.1 million units shipped, a 12.8% YoY decrease. Shipments from other vendors also totaled 1.1 million units, down 2.8% YoY.
In total, 8.9 million smartphones were shipped to Indonesia in Q1 2022, a 17.3% YoY decrease. IDC predicts that smartphone shipments in Indonesia during Q2 2022 will be lower than in Q1 due to the increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) and fuel prices.
