Luminate research firm counted the television (TV) series aired by Netflix from January 2020 to August 2023.
The counted series are divided into two categories: continuing seasons and unique series. Cumulatively, Netflix aired 1,390 seasonal series from January 2020 to August 2023. Meanwhile, the number of unique series reached 1,013.
Over the past four years, the most Netflix TV series were aired in 2022, namely 441 seasonal series and 398 unique series.
As of August 2023, Netflix had aired 216 seasonal series and 211 unique series. This number may still increase by the end of the year.
Despite recording the highest number of broadcasts compared to seven other platforms researched by Luminate, a significant number of shows were canceled by Netflix. Luminate even stated that the cancellation of Netflix TV series was the highest compared to other platforms.
"So far, the gross number of Netflix series cancellations is the largest compared to any major streaming platform, but this is due to the very large volume of content released," said Luminate in its report.
During the same period, the gross number of canceled Netflix series reached 103. The highest number of cancellations occurred in 2020, reaching 42. However, over time, the trend of Netflix show cancellations has decreased, as seen in the graph.
Meanwhile, Netflix competitors such as Disney+ recorded 133 seasonal series and 109 unique series during the same period. 23 shows were canceled.
Prime Video, on the other hand, recorded 239 continuing series and 190 unique series, with 17 cancellations from January 2020 to August 2023. The other seven platforms studied did not reach 1,000 content items like Netflix.
Note that this research was conducted in the United States, so the number of content may differ compared to broadcasts in other countries. US Netflix content is usually much more comprehensive than in other countries, according to CNN Indonesia.
This Luminate research, in collaboration with the Variety Intelligence Platform, was conducted by analyzing TV content released by the eight largest subscription-based video-on-demand (SVOD) streaming services based in the United States. These platforms include Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Max, Apple TV+, Paramount+, and Peacock.
In this report, the term seasonal/continuing series refers to non-limited TV series released by streamers or linear networks. Unique series refers to the number of titles of continuing series released in a particular year or period.
