Most Online Merchants Offer Goods Through Instant Messaging

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that almost all businesses (93.98%) conduct online sales through instant messaging applications, such as WhatsApp, Line, Telegram, and others.

Furthermore, 54.66% of e-commerce businesses sell through social media, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others.

Only 21.64% of businesses have sales accounts on marketplaces/digital platforms. Marketplaces are online locations for buying and selling products that connect buyers and sellers on a single platform.

Then, 10.42% of businesses use email for online sales. Finally, only 2.38% of sellers use a website to sell their products.

The 2021 e-commerce statistics are a publication compiled based on the results of the 2021 e-commerce survey conducted on a sample of 11,928 businesses across all provinces in Indonesia. The scope of the 2020 e-commerce survey included businesses that used the internet to receive orders or sell goods and/or services during 2020.

E-commerce itself is defined as the sale or purchase of goods or services conducted through a computer network with a model specifically designed for the purpose of receiving or placing orders.
