In January 2023, a recorded 1,645 children were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. This data, shared by the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI), represents a 70-fold increase since 2010.
According to *Katadata*, this equates to two cases per 100,000 children. The majority of cases are concentrated in Jakarta and Surabaya, East Java, with IDAI estimating that 60% of affected children are girls.
The Center for Indonesia’s Strategic Development Initiatives (CISDI) attributes this surge in diabetes cases to several factors: increased consumption of sugary drinks, exposure to advertisements for these products, changes in lifestyle, and weak regulations.
“We see this as one of the major risk factors for the public,” said Olivia Herlinda, Head of Research and Policy at CISDI, to *Katadata* on Thursday, February 9, 2023.
This raises the question: why do people choose and consume sweetened products, such as soft drinks?
Research from Kurious, part of the Katadata Insight Center (KIC), sheds light on this. Kurious tracked the soft drinks most frequently consumed by respondents over the past year (2022-2023).
Teh Pucuk was the most popular, consumed by 67.5% of respondents. This was followed by Sprite (64.3%) and Coca-Cola (62%).
Other popular choices included Fanta (59.2%), Teh Botol Sosro (49.4%), Frestea (49.4%), and Nu Green Tea (27.8%). Less popular options were Ichi Ocha (25.1%), Tebs (18%), Pepsi (16.1%), and Root Beer (11%).
Several reasons were given for purchasing these drinks. 77.3% of respondents cited easy availability in stores. 71.01% found them affordable, and 69.4% preferred their taste over other brands. A further 40.4% said they were popular choices, while 39.6% mentioned frequent promotions. The remaining 1.2% cited other reasons.
The Kurious survey involved 725 respondents aged 17-64, with the soft drink section specifically involving 225 respondents. The methodology used Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing (CAWI) between January 2-13, 2023. The margin of error was 3.64% with a 95% confidence level.
