The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has taken down 174 accounts and content containing indications of indoctrination and the spread of radicalism on social media during the period of July-August 2023.
Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi stated that this was done to create peaceful conditions in the lead-up to the 2024 General Election.
"In accordance with President Jokowi's directive to create a peaceful 2024 General Election, Kominfo immediately took down access to this content," said Budi in a statement on Thursday (31/8/2023).
Based on a report from the Directorate of Informatics Application Control, Directorate General of Informatics Applications, Ministry of Kominfo, of the 174 accounts and content, most originated from the X platform.
A total of 116 pieces of radical content were found on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
In addition, content indicating the spread of radicalism was also found on Facebook (46 pieces of content), Instagram (11 pieces of content), and YouTube (1 piece of content).
According to Budi, the access takedown is in accordance with Law Number 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to Law of the Republic of Indonesia Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions.
Kominfo also collaborated with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Agency for Terrorism Countermeasures (BNPT) to trace accounts spreading content related to terrorism, radicalism, and separatism on social media.
"The Ministry of Kominfo continuously searches for content on websites or platforms using the AIS engine every two hours," said Budi.
"Monitoring together with the TNI and BNPT shows a significant increase in the spread of radical content. Some are affiliated with Jemaah Ansharud Daulah (JAD) and Jamaah Islamiah (JI)," he continued.
In response to the numerous findings of radical content, the Minister of Communication and Informatics urged the public to report similar content circulating on various platforms.
"If you find such sites, you can report them to aduankonten.id or the X account @aduankonten," said Budi.
