Beyond Google, These Are the Most Used Search Engines by Indonesian Citizens in June 2023

Based on SimilarWeb data, Google remains the most popular search engine in Indonesia. In June 2023, Alphabet Inc.'s search engine held a market share of 96.78%.

Besides Google, which other search engines are widely used in Indonesia?

SimilarWeb also found several search engines used in Indonesia besides Google. Bing, for example, ranks second with a market share of 1.65%. This Microsoft-created search engine is followed by Yahoo, which holds 0.61% of the search engine market share in Indonesia. Next is Yandex, a Russian search engine, with a 0.32% share.

DuckDuckGo also holds a 0.32% market share. This South American search engine allows users to browse the internet anonymously. The remaining market share of other search engines is 0.37%.

Meanwhile, due to Google's overwhelming dominance in the search engine industry, it was sued by the United States government on September 12, 2023.

Citing CNN Indonesia, Google is accused of violating anti-monopoly laws in its search engine business. This is because Google signed exclusive contracts with smartphone manufacturers and cellular operators, preventing competitors from having a fair chance to compete.

However, Google claims its dominance in the search engine industry is not due to any legal violations. According to Google, their success is based on the quality of their product.

"Users today have more search choices and more ways to access information online than ever before," said Google lawyer John Schmidtlein, as reported by CNN Indonesia on Tuesday (September 12, 2023).
