Lionel Messi once again received the world's best footballer award from France Football through the Ballon d'Or in 2021. According to a Statista report, the Argentinian footballer has won a total of seven Ballon d'Or awards, the most in history.
Messi won this year's award for the world's best footballer after beating Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho. The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward won after obtaining 613 points. Meanwhile, Lewandowski collected only 580 points and Jorginho 460 points.
Since the award was introduced by France Football in 1956, 43 players have lifted this golden ball trophy. However, only 10 footballers have won this prestigious award twice or more.
Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is in second place with a total of five Ballon d'Or awards. Then, Johann Cruyff (Netherlands), Michael Platini (France), and Marco van Basten (Netherlands) each received three Ballon d'Or awards.
Other footballers on this list each received two Ballon d'Or awards. They are Alfredo Di Stéfano (Spain), Franz Beckenbauer (West Germany), Kevin Keegan (England), Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (West Germany), and Ronaldo (Brazil).
