Arsenal reclaimed top spot in the English Premier League after matchweek 17. This followed the 0-0 draw between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield Stadium on Sunday evening, December 17th, 2023 (WIB).
Liverpool, despite dominating possession, failed to break the deadlock.
The Reds had several golden opportunities, including chances for Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Virgil van Dijk. However, these were thwarted by a superb performance from Manchester United's goalkeeper, Andre Onana.
According to the Premier League website, Andre Onana made eight saves against Liverpool. This is the highest number of saves by a Red Devils goalkeeper since David de Gea's 11 saves against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2019.
Due to being held by Manchester United, Liverpool conceded the top spot to Arsenal. The Reds had to settle for a point.
The Merseyside team dropped to second place with 38 points, one point behind Arsenal, who took over the top spot.
The Gunners secured top position after a 2-0 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium on the same evening.
Gabriel Jesus scored in the 53rd minute and Kai Havertz in the 87th minute to secure the win for the Gunners.
Meanwhile, Liverpool also faced pressure from Aston Villa, who are in third place after a 2-1 win against Brentford. The Villans now have the same total points as Liverpool, but Unai Emery's side trails in goal difference.
Manchester City, with 34 points, remains in fourth place. The Citizens are significantly behind the top three after a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday, December 16th, 2023.
Tottenham Hotspur are in fifth place, one point behind Man City. The Lilywhites gained three points with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
