Indonesia's national team suffered a defeat against Iraq in their first Group D match of the 2023 Asian Cup. The Garuda team's match against the Mesopotamian Lions, held at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Monday evening (January 15, 2024) WIB, ended with a score of 1-3.
Iraq scored three goals through Mohanad Ali in the 17th minute, Osama Rashid (45+7'), and Aymen Hussein (75'). Meanwhile, Indonesia's only goal was scored by Marselino Ferdinan in the 37th minute.
In the third minute, Iraq earned a free kick near the Indonesian penalty box after Elkan Baggott fouled Hussein Ali. However, Indonesia's goal, guarded by Ernando Ari, was saved from conceding after Osama Rashid's header in the fourth minute went wide to the left of the goal.
Iraq, who continued to attack Indonesia, finally broke through Ernando Ari Sutaryadi's goal in the 17th minute with a shot from Mohanad Ali.
With eight minutes remaining until halftime, the Garuda team equalized in the 37th minute through Marselino's goal.
However, just before the first half ended, the Mesopotamian Lions regained the lead through Osama Rashid in the 45+7th minute with a score of 1-2 in Iraq's favor. The referee reviewed the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) due to a potential offside, but the goal stood.
Iraq's third goal came in the 75th minute through substitute Aymen Hussein, who battled for an aerial ball with Rizky Ridho in front of the Indonesian goal. Aymen Hussein won the aerial duel inside the Indonesian penalty box before unleashing a half-volley into the top corner to extend his country's lead.
Iraq will next face reigning champions Japan at the Education City Stadium on Friday (January 19, 2024). Meanwhile, the Indonesian national team will face fellow ASEAN team Vietnam on the same day at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium.
