Liverpool maintained its top position in the English Premier League table through week 20.
This is because The Reds continued their winning streak when hosting Newcastle United in the Premier League match on week 20, Tuesday (2/1/2024) early WIB. Liverpool managed to defeat Newcastle with a score of 4-2.
Mohamed Salah scored two goals for Liverpool, in the 49th and 86th minutes respectively.
Salah had previously missed a penalty early in the match. However, the Egyptian winger redeemed himself by converting a penalty for his second goal. The Reds' other three goals were scored by Curtis Jones (74') and Cody Gakpo (78').
On the other hand, Newcastle's two goals were scored by Alexander Isak in the 54th minute and Sven Botman in the 81st minute.
The victory over Newcastle kept Liverpool at the top of the 2023-2024 English Premier League table with a score of 45 points, the highest among other clubs. Jürgen Klopp's team is three points ahead of Aston Villa in second place, and five points ahead of Manchester City in third.
However, Man City still has a chance to close the gap on Liverpool as they have only played 19 matches.
In fourth place is Arsenal with 40 points, the same as Man City. However, The Gunners are behind in terms of goal difference.
Arsenal dropped from the top position after suffering two consecutive defeats: 0-2 against West Ham and 1-2 against Fulham.
Tottenham Hotspur (39 points) and West Ham (33 points) are in fifth and sixth place respectively.
Meanwhile, Manchester United, who lost 1-2 to Nottingham Forest this week, are increasingly far from the top four. After losing to Nottingham, MU is now in seventh place in the 2023-2024 English Premier League table.
The club coached by Erik ten Hag is now nine points behind Arsenal, who are in fourth place.
The English Premier League week 20, 2023-2024, still has one remaining match: West Ham versus Brighton and Hove Albion, which will take place on Wednesday (3/1/2024) early WIB.
