Katadata Insight Center (KIC) released the Katadata Indonesia Middle Class Insight (KIMCI) report at the IDE Katadata Future Forum 2026 event at the Ballroom Djakarta Theater, Jakarta, Wednesday (15/4/2026).
The KIMCI report contains research findings on the condition, behavior, and perceptions of the middle class, which can serve as a basis for formulating strategies and policies to strengthen resilience, drive growth, and support economic and social development in Indonesia.
According to KIC's findings, one of the challenges facing the middle class today is the difficulty in owning housing.
"The limited increase in income is unable to keep up with the rising price of housing, creating a widening gap for the middle class," said KIC in its report.
"As a result, many middle-class people are stuck in the status of renting or living with their families for longer than planned," they continued.
KIC also found that the main factor hindering the middle class from owning housing is the high price, as stated by 35% of respondents.
Here is a complete list of reasons why the Indonesian middle class does not plan to own housing in the next five years, according to KIC's survey:
- High housing prices: 35% of respondents
- No immediate need (not married/not planning to marry): 32%
- Limited access to financing: 29%
- Income increase not commensurate with housing price increase: 28%
- More comfortable living with parents/extended family: 24%
- No strong commitment: 21%
- High down payment: 11%
- Complicated mortgage requirements: 10%
- More affordable housing is available in suburban areas/far from workplaces: 10%
- Others: 7%
KIC conducted this survey in the fourth quarter of 2025-first quarter of 2026 on 1,000 middle-class respondents, then narrowed it down to 100 respondents who do not plan to buy a house.
The respondents are aged between 18-60 years with an expenditure range of Rp2 million to Rp10 million per capita per month, referring to the definition of the middle class from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).
