President Prabowo Subianto stated that he will launch a "roofing project", which involves replacing zinc-based roofs with tiles.
"I want all Indonesian roofs to use tiles. So the project will be a 'roofing project' for all of Indonesia," said Prabowo at the 2026 National Coordination Meeting of the Central and Local Governments in Sentul, Bogor, on Monday (2/2/2026).
This "roofing project" could be a major undertaking. This is because there are many houses in Indonesia with zinc roofs.
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in 2021, as many as 31.38% of national households used zinc as the main material for their roofs.
When broken down by region, the use of zinc dominates in many provinces.
In 2021, there were 17 provinces with a percentage of zinc-roofed houses exceeding 90%, namely:
- Gorontalo: 97.04% of households use zinc as the main roofing material
- West Papua: 96.4%
- North Kalimantan: 95.62%
- North Maluku: 95.38%
- West Sumatra: 94.71%
- North Sulawesi: 94.06%
- South Sulawesi: 93.27%
- West Kalimantan: 93%
- East Nusa Tenggara: 92.86%
- West Sulawesi: 92.62%
- Aceh: 91.9%
- Central Sulawesi: 91.61%
- North Sumatra: 91.11%
- Riau: 90.9%
- Bengkulu: 90.77%
- Maluku: 90.18%
- South East Sulawesi: 90.09%
Zinc-roofed houses also dominate in 5 other provinces, namely East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, Jambi, and Papua, with a proportion of between 70-85%.
Meanwhile, in 12 other provinces, the percentage of zinc-roofed houses is less than 50%, as shown in the graph.
