According to a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the percentage of the Indonesian population aged 5 and over who have ever accessed the internet reached 69.21% in 2023.
This achievement increased compared to 2022, which had a proportion of only 66.48%.
"The high use of the internet reflects a climate of open information and public acceptance of technological advancements and the shift towards an information society," wrote the BPS in its report, *Indonesia Telecommunication Statistics 2023*.
Despite this, the disparity in internet penetration across Indonesia remains significant. The highest internet access rate in 2023 was in the Riau Islands and DKI Jakarta, reaching around 86%, while access in Papua was only 29%.

In addition to spatial inequality, internet penetration in Indonesia is also not evenly distributed by gender.
In 2023, women aged 5 and over who had ever accessed the internet reached 72.07%, while men were fewer at only 66.35%.
