Survey: Majority of Public Agrees Ferdy Sambo Should Receive the Death Penalty

The Indonesian public was shocked by the murder of Brigadier Joshua Hutabarat, involving his superior, Inspector General Ferdy Sambo. According to a survey by Indikator Politik Indonesia, a majority of the public believe Ferdy Sambo deserves the death penalty.

49.4% of respondents stated that Sambo should be sentenced to death. Furthermore, 36.5% believed a life sentence was appropriate, and 7% suggested a life sentence (the wording suggests a possible duplication in the original text).

The percentage of respondents who said Ferdy Sambo deserved the death penalty decreased in September 2022 to 49.4% from 50.3% the previous month. Meanwhile, public opinion favoring a 20-year prison sentence increased from 5% in August 2022.

The survey also revealed that the public trusts the National Police Chief's promise to resolve the case. However, this trust level has significantly decreased; the percentage of those who distrust the police increased from 59.7% in August to 67% in September 2022. National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo confirmed that former Head of the Propam Division, Ferdy Sambo, is no longer a member of the Indonesian National Police. Ferdy Sambo has been dishonorably discharged from the Polri and this has been formalized through a Presidential Decree.

"FS's official status is no longer a member of the Polri," said Listyo Sigit Prabowo on Friday (October 1st).

Listyo also committed to implementing improvements and evaluations within the Polri.
