The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the scores for the freedom and capacity aspects of national democratic institutions both decreased in 2023. These two aspects are indicators that make up the Indonesian Democracy Index (IDI).
Specifically, the national freedom aspect reached 77.48 points in 2023. This figure dropped by 5.32 points from 2022, which reached 82.80 points. The 2021 achievement was 79.72 points.
Meanwhile, the capacity aspect of democratic institutions was recorded at 76.46 points in 2023. This achievement decreased by 1.76 points from 2022, which was 78.22 points. The 2021 score was 75.67 points.
In addition to the freedom and capacity aspects of democratic institutions, the equality aspect is also an indicator that makes up the IDI. This is the only aspect that has increased for three consecutive years.
Specifically, the equality score reached 83.74 points in 2023. In 2022 it was 80.28 points, and in 2021 it was 78.86 points.
Overall, the state of Indonesian democracy is indicated to have worsened. The score dropped from 80.41 points in 2022 to 79.25 points in 2023, a decrease of 0.90 points. With this achievement, Indonesian democracy has fallen from a "good" level to a "moderate" level.
The decline occurred across the board. The IDI score for the central government was 83.14, down 1.15 points, while the IDI score for provinces was 77.21, down 0.74 points.
The assessment is divided into three categories: "good" with an index value of more than 80 points, "moderate" with an index of 60-80 points, and "poor" with an index of less than 60 points.
BPS states that the IDI is used as a tool to measure the development of Indonesian democracy, providing a reference for formulating political development programs for both the central and regional governments.
