State Losses Due to Corruption Reached Rp62.9 Trillion in 2021

Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) reported potential state financial losses due to corruption in Indonesia in 2021. ICW estimates the state loss at Rp62.93 trillion last year.

This figure represents a 10.9% increase compared to the previous year and is the highest in the last five years. Losses handled by the Attorney General's Office amounted to Rp62.1 trillion, while those handled by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) were only Rp802 billion.

The significant state financial losses were contributed by several cases, including the PT Trans Pacific Petrochemical Indonesia gas condensate corruption case worth Rp36 trillion, the Jiwasraya corruption case worth Rp16 trillion, and the PT Fleming Indo Batam textile import corruption case worth Rp1.6 trillion.

The verdicts in corruption cases in 2021 have not served as a deterrent to corrupt actors. This is evident in the potential state losses reaching Rp62 trillion, while the restitution ordered amounted to only Rp1.4 trillion.

"This indicates that both public prosecutors and judges lack a perspective on providing a deterrent effect from an economic aspect," the report stated.

Based on monitoring of corruption criminal case trials at all court levels, there were 1,282 cases with a total of 1,403 defendants last year.
