Indonesia's Human Rights Index Ranks 4th in Southeast Asia in 2024

Human rights enforcement (HAM) in Indonesia is considered relatively good compared to neighboring countries.

This is evident from the V-Dem Institute's Human Rights Index, an independent research institution from Sweden, whose data is processed by Our World in Data.

The V-Dem Institute's Human Rights Index measures human rights enforcement performance based on the level of violence by authorities, political freedom, religious freedom, freedom of expression, freedom of association, and other civil liberty indicators in each country.

The results are processed into a score on a 0-1 point scale. The higher the score, the better human rights enforcement is assumed to be in a country.

In 2024, Indonesia obtained a score of 0.7 points. This score places Indonesia in 4th position in Southeast Asia.

Neighboring countries with higher scores than Indonesia are Timor Leste, Malaysia, and Singapore.

Meanwhile, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar have lower scores, as shown in the graph.

Human rights index data for one other Southeast Asian country, namely Brunei Darussalam, is not available.
