This is the Problem with Indonesia's Music Royalty System According to Citizens

The Indonesian Public Opinion Discussion and Study Group (KedaiKOPI) surveyed public opinion regarding the domestic music royalty system.

The results show that the majority of respondents (44%) considered the main problem to be a lack of transparency from the music royalty management institution.

Furthermore, 29.5% of respondents cited insufficient education and socialization about royalties as the problem, while 26% felt there was a lack of clarity regarding who should pay and receive royalties.

Other opinions included the Indonesian music royalty system being insufficiently sophisticated (0.3%); that there should be no obligation to pay royalties (0.1%); and differing interpretations of regulations or laws among experts (0.1%).

The survey also found that the majority of citizens believe the main issue plaguing the music royalty system is a weak data and reporting system for music usage. This was stated by 40.9% of respondents.

Other respondents considered the root of the problem to be non-transparent institutions (33.9%), and a lack of education for music users regarding royalties (20%).

KedaiKOPI conducted this survey among 1,065 respondents across Indonesia, comprising 57.7% men and 42.3% women.

Data collection was conducted from March 27 to April 4, 2025, using the online-computerized assisted self-interview (CASI) method.

Respondents were predominantly millennials (54.6%), Generation Z (30.9%), and Generation X (14.6%).
