Indonesia's democracy index weakened in 2023. This is evident from the *Democracy Index* report released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).
Since 2006, the EIU has routinely calculated the democracy index of hundreds of countries based on five major indicators: electoral process and political pluralism, civil liberties, government functioning, political participation, and political culture.
The EIU then classifies countries into four regime categories based on their index scores:
* Score > 8: Full democracy
* Score > 6 to ? 8: Flawed democracy
* Score > 4 to ? 6: Hybrid regime
* Score ? 4: Authoritarian regime
In 2023, Indonesia achieved an index score of 6.53, down from 6.71 in 2022.
Although its score fluctuates, since 2006 Indonesia's democracy index score has remained in the flawed democracy category.
According to the EIU, flawed democracies generally have free and fair electoral systems and respect basic civil liberties.
However, this group has significant weaknesses in other aspects of democracy, such as limited press freedom, problematic governance, low citizen political participation, and underdeveloped political culture.
