791 Corruption Cases in 2023, Potential Losses of Rp28 Trillion

According to Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), the number of corruption cases prosecuted domestically has steadily increased over the past five years, reaching a record high of 791 cases in 2023.

ICW assesses that this increase is due to the suboptimal strategies for corruption eradication and prevention.

"Considering that the sentencing has been far from achieving a deterrent effect, it is reasonable that the trend of corruption consistently shows an increase every year," wrote ICW in its report released on Sunday (May 19, 2024).

"Considering the factual condition where corruption cases consistently increase year after year, the government's prevention strategy has not made a significant contribution," it continued.

ICW also noted that the total potential state losses due to corruption cases in 2023 reached Rp28.4 trillion.

"Although there has been a decrease, the potential state losses in 2023 are still very significant," said ICW.

"This indicates that the system of managing state finances or the national economy by institutions, both government, ministries/agencies at the central and regional levels, and even down to the village government level, is still very poor," it continued.

In response to the significant potential state losses, ICW believes that concrete steps are needed to strengthen oversight of the government and the management of state finances.
