Most Indonesian Commanders-in-Chief have been from the Army.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has nominated the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (KSAD), General Andika Perkasa, as the sole candidate for Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). This certainty was known after Jokowi sent a presidential letter (surpres) to the House of Representatives (DPR) on Wednesday, November 3, 2021.

The nomination of a single candidate was made because TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto will be retiring at the end of November 2021. Hadi is known to have served as TNI Commander since December 8, 2017.

From 1945 to the present, there have been 21 generals who have served as TNI Commander. The majority, 16 people, came from the Indonesian Army (AD).

Then, there were three TNI Commanders from the Indonesian Air Force (AU) and two from the Indonesian Navy (AL). The TNI Commanders from the Indonesian Navy were Admiral TNI Widodo Adi Sutjipto and Admiral TNI Agus Suhartono.

Meanwhile, the TNI Commanders from the Indonesian Air Force were Air Marshal Soerjadi Soerjadarma, Marshal TNI Djoko Suyanto, and Marshal TNI Hadi Tjahjanto.
