Government and NGOs Are the Institutions Most Vulnerable to Hacker Threats

The anonymous figure Bjorka has recently become a public talking point after allegedly hacking and leaking data from government institutions. The hacker has uploaded at least nine datasets belonging to state-owned enterprises (SOEs), ministries, and officials in the past three weeks.

They sold data belonging to several companies, ministries, and officials in Indonesia. Bjorka also created a Twitter account under the name @bjorxanism. This account disappeared on Sunday afternoon (September 11th) and reappeared this morning (September 12th).

They also confirmed the authenticity of their Twitter account. “Am I the real one or just a fake account? Go check on breached.to,” they stated.

According to the Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2021, government data is a prime target for hacking attacks. Microsoft stated that attacks on the government sector largely focused on ministries of foreign affairs and other global government entities involved in foreign affairs.

A recorded 48% of hacking attacks targeted government institutions. This was followed by attacks on non-profit organizations (NGOs) and think tanks at 31%. In third place, hackers frequently targeted educational institutions (3%), intergovernmental organizations (3%), and IT companies (2%).
