Expected Years of Schooling in 38 Provinces of Indonesia in 2025

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the average length of schooling (HLS) in Indonesia reached 13.30 years by 2025.

This means that by 2025, Indonesian children aged 7 and above will have the opportunity to receive formal education for an average of 13.30 years, from elementary school to high school or a Diploma I qualification.

HLS is one of the indicators in the Human Development Index (HDI), which reflects the opportunities available to the public to access formal education.

Among 38 Indonesian provinces, there are 21 provinces with HLS figures above the national average, while 17 other provinces are below the average.

In 2025, the highest HLS figure recorded in the Special Region (DI) of Yogyakarta, which is 15.78 years. This means that children aged 7 and above in this province have the expectation of receiving formal education up to the equivalent of a Diploma III qualification.

3. West Sumatra: 14.31 years
4. Maluku: 14.1 years
5. East Kalimantan: 14.04 years
6. West Nusa Tenggara: 13.99 years
7. Papua: 13.94 years
8. South West Papua: 13.89 years
9. DKI Jakarta: 13.8 years
10. Bengkulu: 13.76 years

On the other hand, these are the 10 provinces with the lowest HLS figures nationwide in 2025:

1. Central Papua: 9.64 years
2. Mountainous Papua: 9.98 years
3. Bangka Belitung Islands: 12.5 years
4. South Sumatra: 12.65 years
5. South Papua: 12.68 years
6. West Kalimantan: 12.69 years
7. Central Kalimantan: 12.78 years
