Lack of Job Opportunities, the Main Challenge for Indonesian Youth

Coinciding with National Youth Pledge Day, which falls on October 28th, Kompas Research and Development released a survey regarding various challenges faced by Indonesian youth.

The majority, or 53.3% of respondents, believe the biggest challenge for young people today is a lack of job opportunities.

Then, 17.2% of respondents highlighted the prevalence of youth involvement in criminal activities such as brawls and drug use.

The next challenges are excessive lifestyles following social media trends (15.5%); meeting daily needs (6.2%); and youth apathy towards national issues (6.1%).

Another 0.6% assessed that Indonesian youth face other challenges, such as difficulty accessing education and lack of faith.

"The series of challenges faced by young people require collaboration and support from all segments of society across generations to overcome them," said the Kompas Research and Development team in their report on Monday, October 28, 2024.

The survey also shows that 53.8% of respondents view today's youth positively, while 43% view them negatively, and 3.2% don't know.

"This assessment is inseparable from observations of the behavior of young people in their daily environment," said the Kompas Research and Development team.

This Kompas Research and Development survey involved 532 respondents from 38 provinces, randomly selected according to the population proportion in each province.

Data collection was conducted from September 23-25, 2024, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.23% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
