Despite Growth, 2022 Consumer Consumption Has Not Yet Recovered from the Covid-19 Pandemic

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that household consumption, measured by Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at constant prices, grew by 4.93% to Rp6.19 quadrillion in 2022 compared to the previous year. This is the highest growth since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Despite this growth, Indonesian household consumption has not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels. This is reflected in the fact that last year's consumption growth was still lower than in 2019, which saw growth exceeding 5%, as shown in the graph.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began (in 2020), household consumption has consistently grown at a rate lower than national economic growth. The national economy grew by 5.31% to Rp11.71 quadrillion in 2022 compared to the previous year's 2.02%.

Furthermore, the share of household consumption in GDP at current prices reached only 51.87% of the total national GDP of Rp19.59 quadrillion in 2022. This is the lowest share since 2010.
