According to International Energy Agency (IEA) data, China was the world's largest coal importer in 2022.
The IEA estimates that China imported 285 million tons of coal last year, comprising 240 million tons of thermal/lignite coal and 45 million tons of metallurgical coal.
Thermal and lignite coal are generally used as an energy source for power plants, while metallurgical coal is used as a raw material for steelmaking.
The next largest coal importers were India, Japan, Europe, Southeast Asia, South Korea, and Taiwan, with details as shown in the graph.
The IEA estimates that global coal imports in 2022 reached 1.34 billion tons, down 2.1% year-on-year.
"China's coal production increased, leading to a decrease in their import needs. India is also continuing to increase its production to reduce imports," said the IEA in its Coal 2022 report.
The IEA also predicts that global coal import demand will continue to decline in the coming years.
"Countries, particularly in Europe, will adapt to the energy crisis and return to the path of phasing out coal consumption. China and India's efforts to secure energy supplies will also affect the decline in their coal imports," said the IEA.
"We expect thermal coal trade to fall by around 10% until 2025. Conversely, metallurgical coal trade is expected to grow by around 6%," it continued.
