Solar energy is a cornerstone of the energy transition plans for many countries. According to a UNFCCC report, of the 166 countries that adopted the Paris Agreement, a majority, or 49%, are committed to increasing the use of photovoltaic solar power plants (PLTS) by 2030.

According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the largest producer of photovoltaic PLTS technology is China.

"China is home to the majority of the global photovoltaic solar technology supply chain. They control 72% of polysilicon production, 98% of ingot and wafer production, 79% of solar cell manufacturing, and 78% of global solar module production," said IRENA in its report, *Renewable Energy and Jobs: Annual Review 2022*.

Not only is China a producer, but it is also the largest exporter of solar modules, a key component in photovoltaic PLTS.

In 2020, China controlled 40.9% of total global solar module exports. The export proportion from other countries was less than 6%, even much lower as seen in the graph.

"In 2020, China's photovoltaic solar technology production had a total capacity of 124.6 GW, two-thirds of which was shipped overseas," said IRENA.

"Meanwhile, countries that use solar energy, such as Germany, Brazil, India, and the United States, are importers. The European Union imports 84% of the solar modules installed in its country, the United States 77%, and India 75%," IRENA revealed.
