Reuters Institute research reveals several platforms and methods used globally to access online news.

In early 2024, social media emerged as the most popular choice, with 29% of respondents accessing news this way. The research team noted this option was favored by younger users.

Second most popular was search engines (25%), considered important across all age groups. The research team even highlighted that 25% of those under 35 preferred searching for news.

Google and Microsoft are both experimenting with integrating more direct answers to news questions generated by artificial intelligence (AI) within existing mobile apps and are striving to create new experiences that provide answers without requiring clicks to the news source.

This survey spanned 47 countries, with a total sample size of 94,943 individuals. Each surveyed country had over 2,000 respondents. This *Study of Journalism* was conducted by YouGov using an online questionnaire in late January-early February 2024.
