Most Gen Z and Millennials Rely on National Media for COVID-19 Information

A World Health Organization (WHO) study shows that 43.6% of Generation Z and Millennials relied on national-scale mass media, such as newspapers, television, and radio, as their source of information about the Covid-19 coronavirus. This percentage was the highest compared to other mediums.

Generation Z and Millennials who chose search engines as a source of information about the coronavirus totaled 36.2%. A total of 35.2% of Generation Z and Millennials sought information about the coronavirus through international-scale newspapers, television, and radio.

Furthermore, 34.2% of Generation Z and Millennials obtained information about the coronavirus from the social media content of traditional media outlets. Another 31.5% of Generation Z and Millennials used WHO social media content as a source of information about the coronavirus.

Social media content from science/health experts was chosen by 28.8% of Generation Z and Millennials. A total of 28.3% obtained information about the coronavirus from government social media content.

Generation Z and Millennials who obtained information about the coronavirus from family and friends amounted to 22.4% and 19.8% respectively. Meanwhile, those who relied on social media content from friends and family amounted to 18.1% and 12.8% respectively.

This study, titled "Social Media & Covid: A Global Study of Digital Crisis Interaction among Gen Z and Millennials," was conducted on 23,500 respondents from 24 countries, including Indonesia. The survey was conducted from October 24, 2020, to January 7, 2021.
