Some consider dangdut music to be lowbrow and unsophisticated. However, it's undeniable that a large portion of Indonesian society enjoys this type of music, typically accompanied by the sounds of flutes and drums.
A Nielsen Radio Audience Measurement (RAM) survey conducted in the third quarter of 2016 showed that dangdut music is enjoyed by radio listeners across generations. Generation X, also known as Gen X, had the highest listenership at 41 percent, followed by Baby Boomers. Generation Z, born in the digital age, also listens to dangdut music on the radio via their gadgets.
RAM is a radio audience measurement survey of 8,400 respondents aged 10 and above. Nielsen conducted the survey in 11 Indonesian cities: Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Surakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Medan, Palembang, Makassar, and Banjarmasin.
