Sensor Tower then dissected usage within the ByteDance-owned application. Referring to the firm's *State of Mobile 2025* report, 55% of TikTok usage time is spent viewing short videos on the main feed.

Next, 7.3% is spent on profiles. Live usage accounts for 0.8%.

TikTok chat or messaging usage reached 0.7%. Other activities comprised 36.2%.

The research team noted that iOS and Android users spent a total of three trillion hours on social media and messaging apps throughout 2024, a 6% year-on-year (YoY) increase from 2023's 2.8 trillion hours.

Social media apps are also starting to diversify their monetization strategies, according to Sensor Tower. While previously social media giants heavily relied on advertising as their primary revenue source, social media apps can now profit from in-app purchases (IAP).

"TikTok's success with in-app purchases (IAP) is encouraging other apps like Instagram and Snapchat to add IAP features as an additional revenue stream—especially since new regulations are making the advertising market increasingly challenging," Sensor Tower wrote.
