According to The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (RISSC), as of October 2023, there were approximately 2.1 billion Muslims worldwide.
"Currently, there are about 2.1 billion Muslims in the world, roughly a quarter of the global population," stated RISSC in its report, *The Muslim 500: The World's 500 Most Influential Muslims 2024*.
Among these billions of Muslims, several individuals boast massive social media followings. Topping the list is Khaby Lame.
Based on data compiled by RISSC, as of October 2023, Khaby Lame had approximately 245 million followers across Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok. Follower counts from YouTube and other social media platforms were not included in this calculation.
Khaby Lame is a Senegalese-born comedic video content creator who is now an Italian citizen. According to Forbes, the 23-year-old earns approximately US$16.5 million annually from his content.
Besides Khaby Lame, another Muslim figure with a large social media following is Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
RISSC noted that as of October 2023, Salman Khan had approximately 161 million followers across Facebook, X, Instagram, and TikTok.
However, Salman Khan is not a "typical Muslim." He has long claimed to also follow the Hindu faith.
"I am a Hindu and a Muslim. My father was a Muslim and my mother was a Hindu," Salman Khan said, as reported by India Today in April 2015.
Other Muslim figures with substantial social media followings include Shahrukh Khan, Paul Pogba, Mohamed Salah, Mesut Ozil, Huda Kattan, Shaquille O'Neal, Mustafa Hosny, and DJ Khaled, as shown in the graph.
Looking at their professions, these 10 highly popular Muslims online generally work in entertainment or sports.
The exceptions are Huda Kattan, an entrepreneur, and Mustafa Hosny, a religious preacher.
"This publication aims to identify the influence of Muslim figures—individuals possessing cultural, ideological, financial, and other forms of power—who can effect change and have a significant impact on the Muslim community," said RISSC.
"It's important to remember that this impact can be positive or negative, depending on individual perspectives," it continued.
