The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that Indonesia's rice imports reached 880,820 tons, valued at US$564.61 million, from January to February 2024.

"This value has increased, both in volume and value," said Acting Head of BPS Amalia Adininggar in an online press conference on Friday (March 15, 2024).

The volume and value of imports increased significantly compared to January-February 2023, by 93% (year-on-year/yoy) and 148.63% (yoy), respectively.

According to the country of origin, most of Indonesia's rice imports came from Thailand, accounting for 59.11% of total rice imports during the period.

This was followed by rice supplies from Pakistan (17.82%) and Myanmar (14.34%). Other countries contributed 8.73%.

This year, the government set a rice import quota of 3.6 million tons. This step was taken because rice production in 2023 decreased, and production from January to April 2024 is predicted to be lower than the same period last year (yoy).

Bulog President Director Bayu Krisnamurthi stated that at the beginning of 2024, Bulog had imported 500,000 tons of rice from last year's quota.

To date, Bulog has realized import contracts with several countries totaling around 800,000 tons.

"300,000 tons of which are new contracts with Thailand and Pakistan," said Bayu in a meeting with Commission VI of the DPR, as reported by Kompas.id on Wednesday (March 13, 2024).

He also said that Bulog's rice stock as of February 13, 2024, was 1.1 million tons. This consists of 1.09 million tons of government rice reserves (CBP) and 11,356 tons of commercial rice.
