In 2021, cigarette company Hanjaya Mandala Sampoerna Tbk recorded sales of Rp98.87 trillion with a net profit of Rp7.14 trillion. Net profit decreased by 17% compared to 2020, despite an increase in net sales.
The decline in net profit was due to an increase in tobacco excise duties last year. In 2020, the company recorded sales of Rp92.43 trillion with a net profit of Rp8.58 trillion.
The company's net profit has been declining since reaching Rp13.72 trillion in 2019, a year without an increase in tobacco excise duties.
Not only net profit has been declining; Sampoerna's market share has also fallen every year since 2018, when it was recorded at 33.5%.
Market share decreased to 32.2% in 2019 and further to 28.8% in 2020. In the first half of 2021, Sampoerna's market share was only 28%.
This year, the government again raised tobacco excise duties by 12%. This tariff increase applies to Sigaret Putih Mesin (SPM), Sigaret Kretek Mesin (SKM), and Sigaret Kretek Tangan (SKT).
