Based on the March 2023 Indonesian External Debt Statistics (SULNI) report, Bank Indonesia (BI) details the flow of foreign debt into several economic sectors.
The sector receiving the largest amount of foreign debt is health services and social activities, totaling US$46.67 billion or Rp695.63 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp14,904 per US$, May 24, 2023).
Second is the government administration, defense, and social security sector, which received loans totaling US$34.65 billion or Rp516.53 trillion.
Education services follow in third place with loans totaling US$32.52 billion or Rp484.8 trillion.
Fourth is construction, with loans totaling US$27.64 billion or Rp411.97 trillion. Fifth is financial and insurance services, totaling US$19.87 billion or Rp296.23 trillion.
Among these sectors, real estate experienced a significant decline. In 2013, it received loans of US$4 million, falling to 0 in 2023. Meanwhile, accommodation and food service providers never received any foreign loans. Note that these figures are still subject to change as calculations are ongoing.
