Millennials Dominate the Capital Market Investor Base

The Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI) report shows that the number of capital market investors reached 7.15 million in November 2021. A majority, or 59.81%, were millennials (aged 30 and under).

The next largest group of capital market investors was aged 31-40 years, accounting for 21.48%. Investors aged 41-50 years comprised 10.51%.

Investors aged 51-60 years made up 5.23%, while the remaining 2.97% were aged 60 and over.

Although millennial investors dominate, their asset value is the lowest among the age groups. Their total assets were recorded at Rp 44.32 trillion in November 2021.

The highest asset value belonged to the 60+ age group, reaching Rp 465.16 trillion. This was followed by the 51-60 age group (Rp 214.82 trillion), the 41-50 age group (Rp 154.24 trillion), and the 31-40 age group (Rp 93.93 trillion).

The majority of capital market investors are private or public employees or teachers (33.12%). Students account for 27.59%, entrepreneurs 14.47%, housewives 5.43%, and others 19.39%.

The majority of capital market investors (69.87%) are located on the island of Java. The remainder are from Sumatra (16.53%), Kalimantan (5.39%), Sulawesi (3.93%), Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, and West Nusa Tenggara (3.33%), and Maluku and Papua (0.95%).
