Tech giant Meta Platforms Inc. recently launched the Threads app.
This new innovation appears to have been well-received globally. Threads has been downloaded over 10 million times in seven hours since its launch on Thursday (6/7/2023).
“10 million people signed up in seven hours,” said Meta Platforms Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg on his Threads account @Zuck, Thursday (6/7/2023), as reported by *Katadata*.
TechCrunch reported that the Threads app is linked to Instagram. However, the app remains independent.
Its content focuses on text, similar to Twitter, but maintains a typical Instagram look and feel. There are like, comment, repost (similar to Twitter's retweet), and share buttons.
Features in the Threads app include replies, similar to Twitter's reply function.
Elon Musk's Twitter is threatening to sue Meta Platforms over the Threads app, alleging violation of Twitter's "intellectual property rights." This was revealed in a letter from Twitter to Mark Zuckerberg, first reported by Semafor.
"Twitter has serious concerns that Meta Platforms is engaging in systematic, intentional, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter's trade secrets and other intellectual property," said lawyer Alex Spiro in the letter, as quoted by *The Guardian*, Friday (7/7/2023).
Beyond the sentiment between these two tech giants, what is Meta Platforms' market capitalization?
Data from Companies Market Cap shows that Meta's average annual market capitalization is often above US$60 billion. However, its capitalization has dropped drastically twice since 2012.
In 2017, Meta's average annual market capitalization reached US$512.75 billion or Rp7.763 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,140 per US$). However, in 2018, its average market capitalization plummeted to US$374.13 billion or Rp5.664 trillion, a decrease of 27.04%.
Then, in 2021, its annual capitalization reached US$921.93 billion or Rp13.958 trillion, the highest value Meta has ever achieved.
Unfortunately, the following year, its capitalization plummeted to US$319.88 billion or Rp4.842 trillion.
As of July 7, 2023, Companies Market Cap recorded the market capitalization of the parent company of Facebook and Instagram at US$729.22 billion or Rp11.040 trillion.
"This makes Meta Platforms the ninth most valuable company in the world by market capitalization according to our data," Companies Market Cap wrote on its website.
Market capitalization, according to Companies Market Cap, is the total market value of a publicly traded company's outstanding shares and is generally used to measure the size of a company.
