According to data from the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Indonesia's total fisheries production volume in 2023 reached 23.54 million tons.
This figure comprises 15.36 million tons from aquaculture and 8.18 million tons from capture fisheries.
Aquaculture production is the harvest from controlled environments, such as floating net cages in the sea, or ponds and fish farms in inland waters.
Meanwhile, capture fisheries production is the catch from natural environments, such as the sea, rivers, reservoirs, and so on.
During the 2017-2023 period, the majority of Indonesia's fisheries production volume came from aquaculture, as shown in the graph.
However, the contribution of aquaculture has tended to decrease.
In 2017, aquaculture contributed approximately 70% to the total national fisheries production volume, then decreased to 65% in 2023.
On the other hand, the contribution of capture fisheries increased from 30% in 2017 to 35% in 2023.
