According to a report by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), throughout 2021, 869,900 tons of fish and other marine catches were sold at Fish Auction Places (TPI) across Indonesia, with a total value of Rp16.28 trillion.
TPIs are markets usually located within ports or fish landing bases, where fish sales transactions take place, both through auction and otherwise. In 2021, Indonesia had 216 active TPIs in Java and 199 outside Java.
"TPIs are established and built by the government for the sale of catches. Data recording related to capture fisheries in Fisheries Ports and TPIs is the spearhead in planning and formulating policies for the Marine and Fisheries Sector," said BPS in its report.
The type of fish with the largest production volume sold at TPIs throughout 2021 was Skipjack Tuna ( *skipjack tuna*), namely 102,750 tons.
Then there are scad, squid, yellowfin tuna, skipjack tuna, and kawa kawa, with volume details as shown in the graph.
However, the above figures do not cover all national fish production. Many fish and marine catches are not sold through TPIs and are therefore not recorded in this BPS report.
Fish not entering TPIs are usually directly channeled by fishermen to local traders, local markets, domestic companies, export companies, or other parties. According to BPS, the volume of fish sold at TPIs is only around 20%-30% of total national capture fisheries production.
"Fisheries is a sub-sector of agriculture that plays a very important role in Indonesia. The vastness of Indonesia's oceans supports enormous potential in the development of fisheries businesses, both capture fisheries and aquaculture," said BPS.
"Specifically for capture fisheries, the production of fish from catches has limitations in natural stock. Therefore, monitoring of fishing activities while ensuring the sustainability of fish resources must be carried out," it continued.
