These Are the 5 Largest Electric Vehicle Battery Manufacturers in the World

The Indonesian government is actively promoting the use of electric vehicles to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This necessitates meeting the growing demand for electric vehicle batteries.

Foreign companies are showing significant interest in Indonesia's electric vehicle development. Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), in collaboration with PT Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC), is building an electric vehicle battery factory worth US$5.97 billion, or approximately Rp 85.77 trillion.

CATL is currently the world's leading producer of electric vehicle batteries. According to *Saur Energy*, CATL's installed battery capacity reached 96.7 Gigawatt Hours (GWh), up from 36.2 GWh the previous year – an impressive 167.13 percent increase. *Bloomberg* reports that CATL held a 35 percent share of the global lithium-ion automotive battery market from January to March 2022.

LG Energy Solution (LGES) holds the second position globally with an installed capacity of 60.2 GWh. This South Korean company accounts for 15.9 percent of the global EV battery market.

For information, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) issued Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 7 of 2022 regarding the use of electric vehicles for operational and personal use by central and regional government agencies. The use of electric cars is considered more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. This is especially relevant given the current high energy prices resulting from tight supply amidst rising demand, exacerbated by the geopolitical conflict stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war.
