In February 2025, student groups in various regions staged demonstrations titled "Indonesia Gelap" ("Dark Indonesia"). The protests stemmed from students' concerns about Indonesia's future due to the Prabowo Subianto administration's policies, which were perceived as being detrimental to the people.
According to a Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) poll, a majority, or 75.5%, of the general public respondents shared these concerns. Of this group, 24.7% worried about Indonesia's future because of budget efficiency policies. Others were concerned about the scarcity of 3kg LPG gas cylinders (18.4%), potential tax increases (12.4%), the free nutritious meal program (MBG) (8.3%), and rising staple food prices (4.4%).
Conversely, 21.1% of respondents expressed no concerns about Indonesia's future, mainly due to the MBG program.
"The MBG program is considered the most appreciated measure. Furthermore, the policy of increasing workers' wages (15.2%) and the success of budget efficiency (14.6%) also contributed to their lack of concern about the current situation," stated the Litbang Kompas team in their report on Monday, March 17, 2025.
This survey involved 524 respondents from 38 provinces, randomly selected according to the population proportion in each province. Data collection was conducted from February 22-24, 2025, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.21% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
