The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) collects zakat and charity donations from global Muslim organizations and communities, then distributes them to refugee families in various countries.

This is done through the *Refugees Zakat Fund* program, launched in 2019. UNHCR claims this program has helped over 4.3 million displaced people worldwide.

For 2022, UNHCR aimed to collect US$8.99 billion (approximately Rp128.9 trillion) in zakat and charity donations.

This target was based on the need to assist 102.6 million refugees, particularly those in conflict zones in the Middle East.

Largest Recipient of Zakat: Lebanon

Lebanon was the largest recipient of zakat and charity in 2022, receiving US$534.3 million.

According to UNHCR data, Lebanon hosts the highest number of refugees per capita globally.

In 2022, Lebanon was estimated to host around 1.5 million refugees from Syria, plus approximately 13,700 refugees from other countries, including Palestine.

"The impact of the country's economic and financial crisis (Lebanon), as well as the Covid-19 pandemic, has led to increased extreme poverty and protection risks for Syrian refugees in Lebanon," UNHCR wrote in its *Lebanon at a Glance 2022* report.

Following Lebanon, the largest recipients of zakat and charity were Syria (US$465.2 million) and Jordan (US$408.4 million).

Indonesia was also a target country, receiving US$12.5 million, the lowest amount compared to other countries.

According to UNHCR, as of February 2022, there were approximately 13,100 refugees in Indonesia, mostly from Afghanistan, Somalia, Myanmar, Iraq, and Sudan.
