Jakarta's Monthly Inflation Rises Again in July 2022, Exceeding Pre-Pandemic Levels

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that Jakarta's monthly inflation reached 0.57% in July 2022, a 0.25 percentage point increase compared to the previous month. This surpasses pre-COVID-19 pandemic inflation levels.

Inflation in the capital city has been highly volatile since the beginning of 2022. In January 2022, inflation was relatively high at 0.46%, followed by deflation of 0.05% the following month.

Then, in March, inflation climbed again to 0.44% and continued in April, reaching 0.70%.

However, in May, inflation dropped sharply to 0.06%. The following month, inflation rose again to 0.32%. Similarly, in July, inflation continued its upward trend, reaching 0.57%.

According to BPS, this increase in inflation was mainly driven by rising prices of red chilies, household fuel, airfare, broiler chicken, and house rent.

Furthermore, the rising prices of several commodities related to back-to-school preparations also contributed to inflation in the capital.

In line with Jakarta, other cities in Indonesia also experienced inflation. Two cities experienced higher inflation than Jakarta: Depok (0.71%) and Bekasi (0.62%).

Meanwhile, two other cities experienced lower inflation: Bogor (0.55%) and Tangerang (0.21%). Nationally, Jakarta ranked 54th out of 90 cities experiencing inflation in July 2022.
