The Financial Services Authority's banking statistics show that the productive assets of conventional commercial banks reached Rp 5.518 quadrillion (Rp 5,518 trillion) by December 2016, a 10.32 percent increase from the previous year. Of this total, non-performing assets reached Rp 84.52 trillion, a 24.7 percent increase from Rp 67.78 trillion in the previous year. Substandard assets amounted to Rp 14.85 trillion, up 16.46 percent from Rp 12.75 trillion in the previous year.
Productive assets of commercial banks in 2016 categorized as sub-standard amounted to Rp 26.2 trillion, a 42 percent increase from Rp 18.45 trillion in the previous year. Those categorized as special mention reached Rp 184.32 trillion, a slight increase of 0.27 percent from Rp 183.7 trillion in the previous year. Meanwhile, productive assets categorized as performing assets reached Rp 5.21 quadrillion, a 10.37 percent increase from Rp 4.72 quadrillion in the previous year.
As is known, the total credit extended by commercial banks to third parties (non-banks) by December 2016 reached Rp 4.38 quadrillion, an increase from Rp 4.06 quadrillion in the previous year. Non-performing loans (NPLs) reached 2.93 percent, or Rp 128.1 trillion. In 2015, banking NPLs reached 2.49 percent, or Rp 100.93 trillion.
