Mount Marapi Erupts on Wednesday Night, Alert Level Raised

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at 7:14 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10.6 millimeters and a duration of 59 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 7, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 5 volcanic gas emissions with amplitudes of 1.6-2.3 millimeters and durations of 69-94 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 4.6 millimeters, an S-P time of 2.5 seconds, and a duration of 21 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 0.5-2.5 millimeters, predominantly 1 millimeter.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 163 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (54 times), while Mount Marapi erupted 34 times.
