Mount Marapi Erupts Again Today, Volcanic Ash Reaches 1,000 Meters

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Monday, April 29, 2024, at 02:27 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Marapi had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (3,891 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 38 millimeters and a duration of 138 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Marapi's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 29, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB, showed 13 instances of tremor with amplitudes of 1.5-3.5 millimeters and durations of 24-174 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 hybrid/multiple-phase earthquake with an amplitude of 1.5 millimeters (s-p not observed) and a duration of 17 seconds, and 6 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.5-3.1 millimeters (s-p 1.6-3.2 seconds) and durations of 14-20 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter or carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 595 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (197 eruptions), while Mount Marapi erupted 172 times.
